Our Refugee Festival feast!

27th June 2024

What an unforgettable day last Friday at our Refugee Festival Scotland 2024 celebration! With the help of volunteers, our community came together for another remarkable event.

After a three-day showcase at Transmission Gallery, our art exhibition -- held for the third year in a row -- came to CWIN with stunning works created by asylum seekers and refugee artists over the past year, under the guidance of Christina Kyriakidou. The lounge was transformed into a gallery of hope and resilience!

Upstairs, our Glasgow ESOL Forum friends held a bread-making demonstration, delighting everyone with recipes from their book, which was also available for purchase. We celebrated together our theme, "Rise and Shine," with bread from around the world, symbolizing unity and new beginnings.

The community meal was a heart-warming success, with so many people coming together! Attendees donned traditional costumes, filling the space with vibrant colours and lively conversations. Our volunteer chefs, themselves asylum seekers and refugees, prepared delicious dishes from various cuisines.

For the first time, our ukulele group, Gie's Peace, serenaded us with beautiful melodies learned throughout 2023 and 2024. Huge thanks to Jim, Pattie, Gina, and Robert from Annexe Communities' Partick Pluckers for leading the group so wonderfully.

The day culminated in a joyful circle dance led by the NW Circle Dancing group, bringing the celebration to a close with grace and harmony.

A massive thank you to the Scottish Refugee Council and the National Lottery Community Fund for making this day possible. This was more than just an event; it was a celebration of culture, diversity, and community spirit!
