Friday Knitting Class: Group Work and Wellbeing

20th November 2024 - Knitting Class

A frosty winter’s day calls for curling up with a hot drink and a good book. There’s one thing that could make this even better: colourful, cosy woollens.

Every Friday our Knitting group meets from 10 am, immediately before our Community Meal. It is an opportunity to meet and make your own woollies or contribute to group projects, either as a learner or as an experienced knitter/crocheter, open to all but taken up mainly by women.

The group has produced a great quantity and variety of items, including hats, scarves, gloves and baby jackets. The major recent project is a wonderful blanket. Many members have contributed to this by crocheting squares, a great example of group work👏👏👏.

The women who come to us have lots on their minds, are often busy with sourcing items for basic survival such as food, sometimes occupied worrying about their asylum claim. We are happy to provide a relaxed and welcoming space to socialise, produce practical items and engage in a focussed activity that generates a sense of achievement and improves wellbeing. Sometimes the group is quietly focussed on their work, other times there is lively chatter and loud laughter.

A participant sums it up: “I can relax my mind, that is the benefit.”

The members have become friends, support each other and some now pass on their skills to new people.

We are grateful to Cathie Connelly, a very experienced community worker, who runs this group for us with the help of Barbara Henderson who teaches crochet. Cathie says: “It is wonderful to see these women come along, sometimes feeling shy and lost, becoming confident, relaxed and enjoying the experience ☺️ .'”

All the different things the group has made in the past.

This activity happens regularly thanks to the support of the Glasgow Communities Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund. If you'd like to join, just come along every Friday at 10am, or message Vivien on 7970 792312 for more information!

Would you like to support this activity? Donations of knitting materials such as wool make a huge difference to the group! You can also make a donation via Givey, writing "More blankets" as your donation message. Thank you, everyone, for the wonderful support!
