Empowering Change at the National Veg Summit!

6th November 2023

We are still buzzing about our participation at the National Veg Summit organized by Nourish Scotland in Edinburgh last week. We explored a critical question: What needs to happen in a Good Food Nation Scotland so that our community members can eat more vegetables? With the support of our Development Worker Vivien Opiolka, two of our community leaders, Fissie and Mosleh shared their brave experience of surviving in the asylum system.

They pointed out how difficult it was for them to get enough (good) food on an allowance of just over £5/ day. Our collective conclusion? To enable disadvantaged communities to eat more vegetables, governments should look for opportunities to raise their standard of living and trust that they will make good dietary choices once they are in a better place.
We are overjoyed at the The Scottish Government's decision to include free bus travel for asylum seekers in their next budget. This will help our community members who are in the asylum system to spend the little money they have on food - the food of their choice.
